Heres a picture of the GNRS 2012 Von Dutch Pinstriper of the year award for excellence in hand painted pinstriping. Here I am with Tom Otis who sponsors the award for the GNRS. Itch comes up with killer one-off trophies every year. Each trophy is unlike the last, and they are all handmade. I was stoked when Tom asked me to help out this year.

Itchy came to Los Angeles for a one month vacation in 1979 to check out the HOT ROD scene . A boyhood dream of his . While visiting L.A. Tommy "Itchy" Otis was armed with a list of top flight Hot Rod builders within a 50 mile radius. Of all the shops Itchy visited , Curt Hamilton was the nicest of all the guys he met , not that the others weren't nice but Curt was special. After one last cold ass Long Island winter Itch & his pal moved out west in 1980 .

While in L.A. back in 1979, Itchy bought a 1952 Chevy Pick Up and drove it back to Long Island . After he painted and it Pinstriped it , the engine blew on the trip out to Cali.

Itchy came to Curt for help , and in no time flat Curt had a small block Chevy , automatic transmission and and new drive shaft and all the other things that go with a engine conversion put in that little truck for just $250.00 . And Itchy was on his way to live out his dream thanks to Curt . Curt took Itch under his wing and literality opened all the doors of So. Cal. Hot Rodding for him . When we asked Itch about Curt , he chokes up and never forgets the life changing act of kindness Curt did for him .

Itchy was quoted as saying it gives him great pleasure in bringing in Chris Hamilton for the 2012 Grand National Roadster Show owned by friend John Buck . Its almost like like passing the torch to Chris , A chip off the old block .

History Repeats itself . During this economic downward spiral , Itchy's business is down like so many are . Itch turned to Chris Hamilton . Armed with a sketch he drew of the 2012 Von Dutch Award for Excellence in Hand Painted Pinstriping and asked for Chris Hamilton's help in building the prestigious award . Just like his Pop , Chris stepped up and took Itchy's sketch add his own spin to it and made a metal sculpted masterpiece . And Itch the constant comic wise ass added a fish bowl and tagged it "You've been under the watchful Fish Eye of VON DUTCH" . Itchy will always have a special place in his heart for the Hamilton family .

Good Luck to all the participants in the GNRS- the cars, bikes and people are what make this the best show around.

I don't have much to say about this roadster, that the pictures can't say themselves. This is just an excellent car. I also dig that it was competitive on gas and with a wedge to boot. Eventually the car received a bigger wedge and switched to fuel, but still was competitive against the big hemis. Absolutely one of the most beautiful race cars in this vein. TOP T!!!

I read somewhere that NASA built a golden LP and attached it to a spacecraft. Engineers figured if intelligent life were to find the disc, they could gather the information off the disc, and understand our world. The disc had the human form, (male and female), mathematics, food, a hydrogen atom, etc. etc. The engineers even used Chuck Berrys' Johnny B. Goode as a way to describe "music". This Birdcage Maserati, shown above, would be my choice to show aliens what an automobile is. This bucket was running over 200mph in '67. The car eventually morphed into the "Groundshaker Jr."

The killer aspects of the car for me, include the chassis construction, including the aluminum paneling, and the mounting of the body. Dig how they mounted the body a tad bit higher than most, and they eliminated the fuel tank normally sticking out in front of the nose. Killer T

So for Labor Day I decided to take a hike in Griffith Park. There is something about having a natural oasis smack in the middle of this great city of ours. No, seriously. Once you pass the liveliness of Los Feliz Blvd and find a parking space, you get placed steps away from serenity.

Once you start walking the trails, you'll start to notice something you take for granted sometimes...silence. I mean, it's not like Yosemite quiet, but a lot quieter than a park. You do hear the slight clamor of the 5 freeway, but that soon becomes white noise.

The presence of man is blatantly obvious, i.e. tagging, buzzing power lines, and ample fire lanes but it's a good thing...I think. For one, it's a slight reminder that you're within reach of civilization. So if you're of the mindset that hiking is too natural for you, this is good grounds to start off at, a shallow end of a pool, so to say. You could knock out a nice course in 2 hours and still make it back home, shower, rest, and STILL get ready for that Sunday dinner date at 5 pm !

For me, what really stays engraved in my mind are those little obstacles you conquer. For example, if you drive north on Normandie Avenue, you should see the Griffith Observatory as a feature on the side of Mt. Hollywood. Well, there is a small point - a peak - just behind the Observatory...I hit that. Yeah, I hiked all the way to that peak there. Check it, there's a small landmark with an engraving that boasts an elevation of 1,619 ft above sea level. Don't believe me, go look. I encourage you to.

Anywho, ultimately what I'm trying to say is that Griffith Park is an oasis that is easily attainable for all, regardless of experience. It's fun and could bring some much needed serenity and time to think a few things out. There's all kinds of interesting things you might come across...it's just a matter of time til you find what it is. Check it, son...werd.

The 100th Brithday celebration of Van Nuys was alot of fun. It was disgustingly hot, and humid. It didnt stop alot of people from coming out, there was alot of cool cars there.

Best of show & Best Lowrider went to a 38 Buick.

Best Hot Rod went to a Blown Chrysler powered Model A.

Best Kustom went to a Ford Lightning.

Best Musclecar went to a LS5 Conv. Chevelle.

I also had some of my guitars there to sample- All in all in was a great day, other than the ball sweating/swamp foot heat.

394" Olds Motor (.280 overbore x .6250 stroke)- 6-71 26% Overdriven

This is the coolest version in my book, even without the Chrysler. The body is totally unconventional, and was built out of (2) 23' bodies. The first picture under the heading of the original article, (shown above) is such a great angle. I'm thinking the haze from the tires obscures what is really not so great looking about the car.

Other than just a great looking car, it destroyed at the strip. In '68 it was running 7.80's @ almost 200 with a blown Olds. 1.50" Chromoly chassis, simple torsion bar front suspension, and aluminum fuel tank under the grille shell. If it was a little longer could be a great looking Modified Roadster. Very cool car. Stay tuned for some more Top T's.

My lady and I went to Long Beach on Saturday. Had the brilliant idea of going there on The Blue Line and 'twas brilliant, I tell ya. During the 45 min trek through people's backyard and alleys, at times I had a bird's eye view of some areas and saw soooo many classic cars !! These cars were in various stages of construction. Some were straight up whips that you floss with...and then there was some that looked like a home for Fido...no, actually, it WAS a home for Fido.

I was beginning to wish I lived in South Los Angeles. Then I realized, I was just romanticizing that idea because I was jetting through this here parts at 50+ mph and looking at it through the safety of my rail car window. 'POP'...there goes that idea. Oh, btw, each rail car has a plaque dedicated to a city in the Greater Los Angeles area ! Now, these plaques have a tid bit of information on said city, like when it was incorporated and who founded the city. The first plaque I read was on the City of Whittier, which was founded by Quakers !! Now I know why the best diner oatmeal I EVER had, was in the City of Whittier !! *Pssscht, Cheeks, you lie.* My return trip car had the City of El Segundo. I tried to read up on it, but somebody had tagged over a majority of the plaque...thank you, citizen.

Anyhow, on our arrival to Long Beach, we were met by killer heat, with a touch of ocean breeze, but still heat. Shit, it was high noon and no shade to be found anywhere to walk and explore the area. Me lady says, "LUNCH." Oh, yeah, it's on. She suggest The Pike Bar & Grill...okay. As we're making our way over, we stumbled across this bar called The V Room. It was high noon, we've been walking for a few minuets and I still hadn't had a lick of Al-ki-hall yet...whatcha waitin' for, right !?

Boom, darkness. But it's all good, because the jukebox is screaming Wanda Jackson's 'Kansas City'. We belly-up and get 2 from the barkeep. It's on. After a couple of minutes, a local patron says, "Hey, you two, I was once like you and *something, something* Willllld Thing !!" Naw, Ikid, Ikid...but hey says,

"Hey, you guys are new. You from around here?"
"Nope...L.A. Just visiting."
"Really, how you like it...WELCOMESS !" *motions barkeep and buys us 2 more beers*
"Gee, thanks Mister ! Cheers !"
"Kevin...Kevin's the name."

Times passes and we're getting the lay of the land, history of the joint, and who's boffin who. Then Kevin buys us 2 more before we crack the seal on the third beer he already bought us a couple minuets ago.

"Oh my gawd, Cheeks...I LOVE IT DOWN HERE !!", my lady adds.
"You should move down here then."
"I think we just might!"

Gawd-dang-git, Court. Well, with those magic words said, Court summoned a pool playing guy to come over.

"You guys thinking of moving down here, huh ?"
"Yeah, kinda...maybe...I don't know....no ?"
"Here...*puts pool stick away*...WE are going to my house. I've got a duplex that I'm ready to rent soon and you two look perfect."*gives us a wink and flashes us a perfect hand gesture*

We stroll down the street, less than a block away from the bar...sweet, if this works out, right ? Uhhhh...not so much. Well, I do appreciate his gesture, BUT...gawd dang-git...the place looks like it's trying for a part in that show called 'Hoarders'. Dood. Zack. C'mon. While he's spewing the sell through his whiskey breath...I just want to leave. Like, now...right now. I almost laugh out loud when he says, "Twelve Hundred...pretty good, considering were just blocks away from the beach." With that kinda rent, he not only pays his mortgage but supports his healthy bar diet. Maybe, champ...I'll look you up, if we're interested...Hey, I know where you live, after all !!

We split and head to the Pike Bar & Grill, where we have a killer lunch and own the jukebox for the next hour and a half. We even had a Jesse James clone bobbing his head for a bit...which isn't saying much, but you get it. We continue on to the beach, to fend off food coma and chill for a bit. So awesome. To think you're on the very edge of a continent like that...it's mind boggling. So, YAY Long Beach and all it's residents for making it what it is. Definitely need to go back again soon. Latez.

I had an old issue of Rolls and Pleats that featured some of the old impko decals by Monte. It twas a great issue, and is an inpiration for the style of logo im seeking to put on the guitars. Hopefully-- something a little tongue-in-cheek, and innovative while harking back to the era of handmade products with stylish branding.

Nice custom @ the GNRS. I checked it out for a good 5 minutes. Its a "new" custom that walks the street rod fit and finish line. The trim along the fenders, and rockers got me- and the deep paint. Nice car! I stole this photo from somewhere.
